Grit traps cleaning

Book service

What is it?

A device used in commercial establishments to remove excessive amounts of sand/mud which could interfere with proper drainage of waste water. Typical applications include car washes, manufacturing facilities, auto repair shops. Other applications may include cutting tables although these more than likley hold the debris from the tables under the water jet and do not discharge into a seperate grit trap.

What does it do?

A grit trap retains wastewater for a sufficient amount of time to allow the separation of solids (grit) from the water. Once water is discharged from the grit trap it makes its way to the waste treatment plant where the water is treated and then discharged into the bayou and ultimately into the ocean.

How does it work?

The trap contains several compartments where the solids will sink to the bottom over a period of time (also known as dwell time). The water that has been “processed” makes its way out of the second chamber of the grit trap and then its off to the city sewer system for additional treatment.

Why Clean it?

The most important key to the successful operation of a grit trap is the maintenance program. The trap should be cleaned (pumped out) routinely to prevent the escape of large quantities of solids. If solids do escape they will settle in your discharge pipes and eventually create an obstruction that is difficult to clear without a large hydrojet and a lot of time. These plumbing visits are typically far more expensive than the occasional cleaning that is required. If you do have an issue with a dischare line is backed up we can help with that .

The City of Houston makes $ when you clean it out and they make far more when you don’t.  The City of Houston requires mandatory quarterly cleanings for grit traps and imposes large fines for non-compliance, even if you beat the ticket you still have to waste your time going to court, parking, being pissed off etc. This is why self service car washes seem to be disappearing within the Houston city limits.

How often do I need to clean it?

The city of Houston requires a quarterly pumping schedule. If you are outside the city of Houston enforcement may vary. The manufacture of this style trap recommends cleaning every 2-3 months. Keep in mind the loading on the trap will not be visible in the surface of the water, it will be on the bottom of the trap (sand and dirt don’t float).
