Grit Trap

What is it?

A device used in commercial establishments to remove excessive amounts of sand/mud which could
interfere with proper drainage of waste water.   Typical applications include car washes, manufacturing
facilities, auto repair shops.

What does it do?

A grit trap retains wastewater for a sufficient amount of time to allow the separation of solids from the water.
Once water is discharged it makes its way to the waste treatment plant where the water is treated and then
discharged into the bayou and ultimately into the ocean.

How does it work?

The trap contains several compartments where the solids will sink to the bottom.

Why Clean it?

The most important key to the successful operation of a grit trap is the maintenance program. The trap
should be cleaned (pumped out) routinely to prevent the escape of large quantities of solids.  The City of
Houston requires mandatory quarterly cleanings and imposes fines for non-compliance.

How often do i need to clean it?

The city of Houston requires a quarterly pumping schedule. If you are outside the city of Houston
enforcement may vary. The manufacture of this style trap  recommends  cleaning every 2-3 months. Keep
in mind the loading on the trap will not be visible in the surface of the water, it will be on the bottom of the
trap ( sand and dirt don't float)
